Netflix has greenlit ‘Squid Game: The Challenge’, a reality TV show based on last year’s hit South Korean drama. According to Variety, it’s set to be “the biggest reality competition series ever,” hosting the largest cast and offering the largest cash prize in reality TV history as 456 players compete for $4.56 million.

Contestants will go through a series of challenges inspired by the original show, plus new ones, which will test their strategies, alliances and character as others are eliminated around them. Recruitment is currently open with just one requirement: applicants must be English-language speakers from anywhere in the world.

I know what you’re thinking – there’s no chance Netflix would actually make a reality TV show where hundreds of contestants get brutally murdered in horrific fashion for the purposes of entertainment, right? Well, I wouldn’t be so sure about that. Just look at the Netflix stock price over the last year:

Oof, not good. Considering those numbers, it wouldn’t be too shocking if Netflix are actually planning to slaughter 455 contestants en-route to crowning one lucky winner who will receive a $4.56 million lump sum. Otherwise it’ll just be another reality TV show in a market already filled with too many of them. I mean what would you rather watch: season 2 of Squid Game or an actual real life Squid Game happening in a mystery location somewhere in the world where the contestants get killed for real? It’s 2022! I think we’re ready for that sort of thing after the f***ery of the last two years or so.

From Netflix’s point of view it’s a no-brainer. The ratings would be through the roof! The stock price would shoot right back up! Besides, MrBeast already did the murder-free version a year ago:

Of course with the stock down and overheads up there’s a chance this show never gets made in the first place. But these corporations always seem to find the cash somewhere, don’t they?
