An Aussie hairdresser is receiving death threats from neighbours after painting his Phillip Island bungalow like a rainbow.
In fact the death threats and homophobic abuse came before Mykey O’Halloran even got started on the paint job, after neighbours had heard about his plans. Mykey told Q News that one neighbour turned up to his door and straight up said to him: “See what happens if you [paint your house], you gay c**t.” The neighbour also called O’Halloran and ‘f**king f***t c**t’.
As if the neighbour wasn’t vexed enough already, he was taken to court over the incident and fined $2,500, which he must pay to Victorian LGBTIQ health organisation Thorne Harbour Health. What a troll job by the judge, who also issued him a 12-month good behaviour bond.
Mykey says the abuse from his neighbours had caused him to relive past experiences of homophobic assaults and bullying. After speaking out about the incident though, over 100 people turned up to help him paint his house. Result!
Mykey told Q News:
“The message we must take out of this situation and learn from this is to stand your ground. Don’t let bullies tell you how you should be living your life, whether that be someone you know, someone you don’t.”
Don’t let them tell you what you should be wearing, what you should be doing or how you should be doing it, who you should be as a person or how you choose to show up in the world.”
Yeah OK you don’t need to like someone’s rainbow-coloured house from an aesthetic point of view, but to hate it because of what it represents, and to send death threats to that effect? Not the kind of world anyone wants to be living in really. Gonna be a nightmare re-painting that bungalow after the Australian sun has it’s way with it though – will tell you that. Go Mykey Go!
