3. The Heretic’s Fork & The Choke Pear

Medieval Torture - Heretics Fork In Use

The Heretic’s Fork was attached to the prisoner, whether they were in a cell or tied to the ceiling or forced to stand. Of course, they couldn’t move without discomfort, but the main aim here was to keep them sleep deprived because if you nodded off you pierced your delicate throat or chest. An exhausted man is an easy one to coerce. They were kept there for days.

The choke pear or pear of agony was another marvel of the macabre. The oddly shaped contraption was used to either silence someone or just as a good old fashioned pain enforcer. Once the beast was placed in the mouth it was opened wider and wider using the key at the base, causing stretching, splitting, puncturing etc.

This is a pretty versatile contraption, I’m sure some of the sicker Chirpse readers are already way ahead of me. The mouth is of course not the only delicate orifice on a human body. Homosexuals were punished through the back door and a women who miscarried (which was deemed a crime back then, WTF?) would be punished through the front door.

Well, I think I’ll leave that there for now. But just so you know, I had a bit of a look at some torture methods used outside of Europe too, which will be my topic of choice next time we meet.
