McDonald’s Employee In ICU After Co-Worker Threw Hot Oil At Him

A young McDonald’s worker was left in “excruciating” pain with second-degree burns across his face, neck, arm and back when a co-worker allegedly threw scalding hot oil at him in a random attack.

Jacob Smith, 20, has spent more than a week in the intensive care unit with second-degree burns covering 22% of his body following the attack at a Maccies in Yuba City, California.

The attack took place on Saturday, May 30, as Jacob was preparing to end his shift.

According to his mum, Amber Smith, Jacob was inside the restaurant’s office getting ready to count money when he noticed movement out of the corner of his eye. As he turned around, hot fryer oil was thrown directly onto him.

The pain required ICU-level pain management, which cannot be administered on standard hospital wards. Doctors are now working to reduce the burn size to limit the amount of skin grafting needed ahead of Jacob’s scheduled surgeries.

The suspect, 23-year-old co-worker Gelani Buitt, fled the scene immediately after the incident…

Jacob says he has no idea why Gelani would have attacked him, asking his mum while in the ICU: “Why would he do this to me?”

Gelani was named a missing person by the Sutter County Sheriff’s Office, which said he was “considered at risk due to a medical diagnosis and vulnerabilities.”

He was later found, arrested and hit with multiple felony charges, including battery causing serious bodily injury. He is now being held without bail.

Just imagine having your face melted off in a hot oil attack by your co-worker at McDonald’s, and having no clue why he did it? Hopefully the police can get some answers out of Gelani whether he had a motive or was just out of his mind or what.

As it happened in the workplace, I imagine McDonald’s is a liable for this. How many millions will they have to stump up to make this lawsuit go away, I wonder? Well, enough to cover Jacob’s hospital bills, that’s for sure. Get well soon, bud.
