What a week for retro video games! Not only was it announced that we’ll be getting a new ‘Monkey Island’ game this year from original creator Ron Gilbert, but now it’s been announced that we’ll also be getting remakes of seminal noir classics ‘Max Payne’ and ‘Max Payne 2: The Fall Of Max Payne’ for PS5, X Box Series X and PC.

‘Max Payne’ was one of the biggest games of the early 00s, as players took on the tortured character of New York City cop Max and raced around the city trying to solve the murder of his family and take some new designer drug off the streets. The game was famed for its ‘Bullet Time’ combat system where you could go into slow motion and jump around whilst shooting which was obviously reminiscent of ‘The Matrix’ – also big at the time – and a hell of a lot of fun.

Original developers Rockstar are teaming up with Remedy for the remakes with Remedy CEO Tero Virtala, saying:

Max Payne has always held a special place in the hearts of everyone at Remedy, and we know the millions of fans worldwide feel the same.

We’re hugely excited to be working with our partners at Rockstar Games once again for the chance to bring the story, action and atmosphere of the original Max Payne games back to players in new ways.

That does sound like it could be a good time, but I’m not sure about some of these remakes/reimaginings. On the  ne hand, it’s fun to see them updated with sick graphics, but on the other you can very clearly see how clunky and old they feel compared to new games. Why not just stop living in the past and come up with a new Max Payne game hey? Give the people what they want.

For more of the same, check out the trailer to ‘Max Payne 3’. Remember that one?
