Idris Elba Says James Bond Shouldn’t Be ‘Woke’ – “Don’t Try And Answer The World’s Taste”

About 10 years ago there was a massive rumour that Idris Elba was being lined up to play James Bond, which caused a bunch of meltdowns because he wasn’t a white guy.

Well in the end those rumours ended up being BS, with Elba since confirming that the reports were “never legit.”

Furthermore, he’s now explained that a Black or African Bond is not “realistic” because certain global markets would simply not be receptive to it i.e. it’s too “woke” an idea.

The 53-year-old told British GQ: “Bond is big all over the world. And audiences won’t [all] go for a Black male, an African male, playing Bond. That’s not what they like in their culture. Period…

“Bond is so unrealistic, so a hint of reality is good, but let’s not try and make it woke. I think you’ve got to be pure to what it is: escapism. Don’t try and answer the world’s taste. Just be Bond.”

Well, I suppose he knows what he’s talking about, although I do actually think Idris Elba would have made a pretty sick 007. After all he’s one of the baddest (and best-dressed) actors in Hollywood.

Yeah OK he’s 53 now so the ship has beyond sailed, but then again, if Liam Neeson could go around rescuing hostages at his age I’m sure Idris Elba could handle a few James Bond stunts no problem. Alas, I guess we’ll never know.
