We’ve all seen ‘Black Mirror’ and countless other science fiction TV shows and films where people can control other animals and robots with their minds and the video below shows that we’re almost at that point in reality now as well.

The clip comes courtesy of the Robotic and Autonomous Systems Implementation and Coordination Office (RICO) of the Australian Arm and shows soldier wearing devices which allow their thoughts to be translated into simple commands for the robot to follow. The solider manages to successfully send the dog to several different locations across a field during the course of the video which you can check out below.

You can also read an explanation of the process from Lieutenant Colonel Kate Tollenaar explained:

This collaboration focused on how we could create a brain robotic interface that will allow a soldier, rather than operating an autonomous system with a command console, to operate the system using brain signals.

The potential of this project is actually very broad. At its core – it’s translating brainwaves into zeros and ones and that can be implemented into a number of different systems.

It just happens that in this particular instance, we’re translating into controls for a robot.

Yeah I mean that video isn’t really that great is it and didn’t really do much to show that these robots were being controlled just by thoughts – there easily could have been someone using a remote control or whatever just out of shot – but I suppose it’s just the idea that this is even fully possible is completely out there and mental. Every time I write one of these I know that the intentions behind the company making these robot machines is good, but I have to ask just what the hell they’re playing at because something terrible is clearly going to happen when these robots become autonomous and start attacking us. Please stop before it’s too late guys.

For more of the same, check out this malfunctioning dental school robot. Seriously creepy.
