I don’t think any dog breed in history has received worse PR than the XL Bully has this week, and it’s about to get a whole lot worse following the revelation that at least 50% of all XL Bullies in the UK are related to ‘Killer Kimbo’; a breeding dog whose close offspring have killed multiple people.

Killer Kimbo is so inbred that he has the same grandfather 4x over. Kimbo was bred by Los Angeles-based breeder Gustavo Castro and is reportedly born from a brother-sister pairing, with his grandparents sharing the same father. Doesn’t get more inbred than that really.

The good people at BullyWatch tracked down the breeders involved and rooted through the data, and found that Killer Kimbo was purposely inbred to create a larger, more muscular variation of the pit bull.

Their research led them to discover that 32 out of 50 breeding dogs in the UK are related to Kimbo. Expressing her concerns, scientist and campaigner Gloria Zsigmond told The Telegraph:

“A lot of the time, the Bully breeders are trying to hide how inbred the dogs are. Kimbo bled into all those bloodlines because he was early on and he was so dominant in breeding. There are some good bloodlines where Kimbo isn’t there, but there are many where he is.”

One of Kimbo’s offspring, Niko, was responsible for the death of a four-year-old girl in Louisiana. Another named Cookie Doe killed a 65-year-old man in Wales. There’s more incidents too, with XL Bullies accounting for 38% of all dog attacks in the UK this year.

Despite BullyWatch’s findings, the group has urged people not to ‘label every descendant of Kimbo as defective’:

“It’s obvious that the number of generations removed will significantly influence the outcome. The crucial message is the undeniable relevance of genetics. This understanding is vital if we are to engage in a reasoned discourse on why a large number of XL types are displaying unexpected and sudden aggressive behaviour in the UK.”

Well, that may be the case, but still – these findings are not good news for the “it’s all about the owner” crowd. XL Bullies are genetically predisposed to violence, and the XL Bully bloodline dominating the UK is directly descended from one of the meanest XL Bully dogs around. I mean, his name is ‘Killer Kimbo’ FFS. Why don’t they just name the breed ‘DeathMurderChildKiller’ and be done with it next time?

Earlier today, Rishi Sunak announced that the XL Bully will be banned in the UK by the end of the year. So that wraps up a shockingly bad week for the breed, with probably the wisest outcome.
