In what might be the most poorly-executed attempt at covertly filming another human ever, an American Airlines flight attendant allegedly strapped an iPhone to an airplane toilet seat and recorded a teenage girl using the bathroom.

The 14-year-old girl said she was waiting to use the toilet in the economy section where her family was sat on their flight from Charlotte to Boston. She said a male flight attendant approached her and told her to use the toilet in the first-class cabin instead.

He entered the restroom first to wash his hands and a minute later told the girl that the seat was broken and not to mind it, according to a lawsuit filed last Friday.

Once inside, the girl was greeted with this:

I mean, you might as hire a whole film crew if you’re going to be that obvious. The girl was obviously shocked and terrified as it immediately occurred to her that ‘someone had put the phone there to film her using the toilet’, states the lawsuit.

Worst still, the girl and her family’s lawyers claim that other attendants on the September 2 flight failed to take the suspect’s phone away, which allowed him to destroy the evidence.

American Airlines have stated that the flight attendant was immediately ‘withheld from service’ and has not worked since: “We take this matter very seriously and have been fully cooperating with law enforcement in their investigation, as safety and security are our highest priorities.”

The teen has not been identified, but her father told the New York Post: “I think there’s a real feeling of violation. I think as a teenage girl, she’s a little bit embarrassed that something so intimate as going to the bathroom would be filmed this way.”

It definitely feels like something is off about this whole thing, because I just cannot believe this flight attendant genuinely believed his plan would go off without a hitch, with his iPhone blatantly poking out of the makeshift ‘Seat Broken’ sign… with the flash on, no less! Subtlety not exactly his strong point, is it?
