A year after coming out as non-binary and adopting they/them pronouns, Demi Lovato has announced that she is reverting back to she/her after recently ‘feeling more feminine’.

Here’s what the 29-year-old told Spout Podcast this week:

‘I’ve actually adopted the pronouns of she/her again with me. So for me, I’m such a fluid person that I don’t really and I don’t find that I am… I felt like, especially last year, my energy was balanced and my masculine and feminine energy so that when I was faced with the choice of walking into a bathroom and it said, women and men, I didn’t feel like there was a bathroom for me because I didn’t feel necessarily like a woman.’

O…K then. Obviously Lovato and anyone else struggling with their gender identity have the right to live their lives and present themselves the way they seem fit, but I don’t get why feeling less or more or equal parts feminine and masculine means she has to change her pronouns? Doesn’t that just reinforce gender stereotypes? There was always the suspicion that this was some celebrity jumping on the latest trend, and now a year later, has she reverted back to her original pronouns for even more attention?

She elaborated further on the podcast:

‘I didn’t feel like a man. I just felt like a human. And that’s what they/them is about. For me, it’s just about like feeling human at your core.

Recently I’ve been feeling more feminine, and so I’ve adopted she/her again. But I think what’s important is, like, nobody’s perfect. Everyone messes up pronouns at some point, and especially when people are learning, it’s just all about respect.’

Well, whatever floats your boat I guess. Can probably expect more gender/pronoun changes from Demi Lovato given she’s “such a fluid person” and it’s pretty convenient because any time she wants some headlines – boom, just announce your latest pronouns. Thoughts & prayers with the people who have to speak to or e-mail her on a daily basis. Probably the most easily misgendered person on the planet at this right.
