Costa Coffee Defends Trans Mural After Boycott Calls

Most people avoid Costa Coffee on the grounds of it being so expensive, but the coffee chain now faces calls for a full-on boycott because of a Pride mural which includes a cartoon picture of a trans person.

The image, which went up at their Brighton and Hove branch (obviously), shows a topless cartoon surfer holding a coffee cup and puckering up for a delicious swig. Oh, and the person also has two mastectomy scars on their chest:

Of course, the chest scars indicate that the person has undergone top surgery to have their breasts removed, and so commentators like Laurence Fox are accusing Costa Coffee of promoting ‘the mutilation of healthy young girls.’

Tanya Carter, spokesperson for the gender-critical Safe Schools Alliance, told MailOnline it was “crass and irresponsible” for Costa to use the image, and #BoycottCostaCoffee has been trending on Twitter.

Are Costa Coffee bothered, though? Doesn’t seem like it. In a statement, the coffee chain said:

“At Costa Coffee, we celebrate the diversity of our customers, team members and partners.

We want everyone that interacts with us to experience the inclusive environment that we create, to encourage people to feel welcomed, free and unashamedly proud to be themselves.

The mural, in its entirety, showcases and celebrates inclusivity.”

Well, I guess they’re sticking to their guns. The good news is that children cannot get this type of surgery in the UK until they are 18, and even then will have to have lived as their chosen gender for at least 12 months and must have completed an in-depth psychological assessment before being considered for the female-to-male top surgery.

Even still, there are plenty of reasons to boycott Costa anyway. Support your local café and bring back the high street!
