I love a good story about someone seeing someone’s face in mashed potato or similar, but this one about a carpenter spotting Jesus’ face in the wood of his workshop is perhaps going a bit too far.

51 year old Mat Askham was putting a lacquer finish on a cupboard he had crafted when he noticed the face of Jesus looking back at it from the wood. He immediately took a picture of it to forward to his family and friends before one of them suggested that he should turn his workshop into a shrine and start charging people to visit.

Here’s what Mat had to say about it all:

I’ve had the piece of ash sitting looking at me in my workshop for quite some time.

I thought, ‘oh my god look at that, there’s a face staring at me’.

It looked at me, I looked at it and I had to take a photograph of it straight away because it was just so funny. It’s really quite bonkers.

You can see two eyes, a nose, a bit of a moustache and a goatee. The ears are hidden by the hair down the side.

It’s creepy that my very Christian friend came to see me, we chatted for half an hour chewing the fat over the last 20 years and then five minutes later I discovered the face of Jesus in a kitchen unit.

These things don’t happen every day.

A friend of mine said ‘shut the business down, set it up as a shrine, start charging people to come in’.

My partner Nicola messaged me on WhatsApp to ask ‘have you discovered Jesus?’

It’s ludicrous really, but it’s incredibly funny. People can’t stop laughing at it.

I mean I’ll agree that it looks like Jesus, but is it that funny? I kinda looked at it once and cracked a smile and think it probably looks a bit more like Groot or Chewbacca or someone else to be honest. Glad that people find it so hilarious.

Am slightly disappointed that Mat isn’t seriously considering closing down his workshop and turning it into a shrine either. Would love to hear how that had worked out in six months because it sounds like one of the most terrible ideas of all time.

For more of the same, check out this scientist showing us what Jesus really looked like. Nothing like anyone we’ve ever seen basically.
