A bartender in Paris has been convicted of manslaughter and sentenced to four months in jail after a customer he served 56 shots to died from alcohol poisoning. He has also been banned from working in bars for a year.

Giles Crepin admits that he made a mistake by displaying the bar record of 55 shots for all to see in his drinking establishment, as this inevitably played a part in Renaud Prudhomme’s death because he was repeatedly goaded by his daughter to try and beat it. Each shot contained between 20 and 40ml of liquor, meaning that Prudhomme drank almost a litre of hard alcohol during the competition.

This included one leg when he pounded 30 shots in just under one minute. Impressive sure, but it ultimately left him dead so perhaps not that impressive.

Crepin encouraged Prudhomme during the competition, constantly pouring him shots and telling him at one point that he only had 12 left to go before he broke the record.

Antoine Portal, who was representing Prudhomme’s family in the case, had this to say following its conclusion:

It is not known whether he would still be alive if he had not drunk the last 12 shots, but by making down those last shots, he was left with no chance.

We want to remind some professionals that it is illegal to serve alcohol to clients who are in an advanced state of inebriation.

Ultimately the blame for Prudhomme’s death seems to be landing at the feet of Crepin, as he continued to serve him and encourage him throughout the experience and he really should know better than to serve a clearly intoxicated customer so much hard alcohol. I think that his daughter must share some of the blame though for even goading him to beat the record in the first place and no doubt encouraging him during it too. I’m sure she will be paying for that for the rest of her life though. The fact is though as a bartender Crepin should have known better.

The whole story is just plain dumb though. Not as dumb as the guy who said it was better to die from vodka than boredom who then promptly died from drinking too much vodka though.
