5) Fashion Is Spinach

Elizabeth Hawes was a fashion designer and an outspoken critic of the fashion industry. She thought that people should be able to wear what they wanted rather than be dictated to by the snooty fashion world. Hear, hear. Fashion Is Spinach was an exposé of the fashion industry as she saw it.

I’m not sure what ‘spinach’ was referring to though? Maybe ‘spinach’ meant the same as ‘whack’ back then. Maybe we should try to bring that back into common usage?: “Dude, those new trousers of yours are total spinach!” Yeah, that could work.

6) How Green Were The Nazis?

Apparently the Nazis created nature preserves, contemplated sustainable forestry, curbed air pollution, and designed the autobahn highway network as a way of bringing Germans closer to nature. But, if my memory serves me right, I think there were some bad things they got up to that sort of counteract anything positive they did…. what was it again? Oh yeah! They tried to take over the whole world and wipe out millions of people. That’s it.

7) How To Avoid Huge Ships

I would have thought that was a no-brainer. But apparently it was written by an experienced captain of small vessels and is quite a useful guide if you like the idea of boating but don’t like the idea of drowning.

8) How To Date A White Woman

I’m not sure you could adequately deal with that topic in just one book. That’s a biggy.
