It looks like Andy Ruiz Jr is well up for a fight with Tyson Fury in 2022, after responding to news that he’s being considered as a possible next opponent for the Gypsy King.

The Mexican heavyweight was named as one of two options for Fury for March next year by Fury’s co-promoter Bob Arum, alongside Robert Helenius.

The WBC have ordered a fight between champion Fury and Dillian Whyte, but a number of issues remain unresolved – mainly Whyte currently being in legal arbitration with the WBC over the fight purse (Fury’s camp want 80 – 20 in favour of Tyson and Whyte wants a split closer to 55 – 45). Fury’s camp are not expecting the matter to be resolved any time soon and so are open to new challengers.

Former IBF, WBO and WBA heavyweight champion Ruiz responded to Arum’s comments on Instagram:

Well, that will certainly make for an interesting showdown. I’m not sure if Ruiz would accept the fight against Fury without the WBC title on the line but his IG post clearly suggests he’s up for a scrap, so that’s promising. Then again, would he really say anything different? This guy’s been talking about his ‘next fight announcement’ for ages but never seems to actually do anything. However there’s nothing more appealing payday-wise and competition-wise than a Tyson Fury fight, surely.

Not to mention Fury/Ruiz would probably be a bigger fight Fury/Whyte. Nobody in the US knows Dillian Whyte and Andy Ruiz will always be the fat Mexican dude who destroyed Anthony Joshua, and is a former world champ himself. Can see Fury smashing him tbh but not without facing some tricky spots. Let’s hope this goes down in March 2022, or that Fury fights someone at least.
