Gen Z Teens Label American Pie ‘Deeply Problematic’ After Watching It For The First Time

There’s lots of classic films you probably wouldn’t get away with making these days, but I never really considered 90s teen comedies to be among them.

Well VICE (who else?) went ahead and showed American Pie to a group of ‘woke teens’ in 2023, and in their view the flick is “deeply problematic” and “bordering on incel attitudes.”

For anyone who hasn’t seen it, it’s about a group of five high school buddies who make a pact to lose their virginities by graduation. One thing leads to another, and the main character ends up shagging an apple pie in the middle of his mum’s kitchen.

It was a huge hit when it came out in 1999, but not so popular with the group of 19-to-23-year-olds that VICE showed it to. One reviewer, 16-year-old Taylor, said the movie was “completely ridiculous”, and that she believes “men treat women with a lot more respect and equality now”.

Another, 17-year-old Hannah, said the scene where the male characters film a foreign exchange student getting changed in her room is “deeply problematic.” She criticised the film for not “even questioning the morality of doing this,” adding that there is “no way a teen film made now would allow it.”

Meanwhile, Olivia, 18, said that the way the male characters “think they deserve sex” was “bordering on incel attitudes.” She added that any teenage boy watching the film would “basically feel entitled to behave however you wanted to towards women.”

Even one of the film’s stars, Shannon Elizabeth (who played the aforementioned foreign exchange student who was every teenager’s wet dream in 1999) admitted the film would “be a problem” if it was made today. Speaking on Inside of You with Michael Rosenbaum earlier this year, she said:

“If this had come out after the #MeToo movement, there would definitely be a problem.”

On the scene where she is being filmed while undressing, she added:

“I think that it would have gone down differently.”

I guess that’s fair enough really. If American Pie were made today, maybe the boys could be expelled or arrested for covertly filming the foreign exchange student getting naked. Maybe Biggs’s buddies could console him rather than laugh at and shame him when he jizzes in his pants the moment a woman touches him for the first time. For sure the writers would have to play it differently because teenagers are just way too impressionable to handle a comedy about a Jewish high school kid shagging a pie. Look at how we all turned out…?
