British Woman Jailed In Hong Kong After Accusing Banker Of Raping Her

A British woman from Hackney, east London, will spend the next six years in a Hong Kong jail after accusing a man of rape, and then attempting to extort him out of £100,000 to drop the case.

Isabel Rose, 26, was found guilty of blackmail and perverting the course of public justice this week in a Hong Kong court.

Rose had met the man, a British banker, while travelling in Thailand and then went to meet him in Hong Kong.

She reported being raped by him in his Hong Kong apartment just 12 hours after arriving in the city.

Within hours of her report, police arrested the man but released him without charge. Rose was then arrested and charged with blackmail.

It turns out she had demanded £5,000 from the man after she made the report, which he paid. However, she then asked for a further £100,000, prompting the man to go to police and report that he was being blackmailed.

Her case centred around WhatsApp messages exchanged between her and the banker after the alleged rape.

Rose wrote to him: ‘You violated me last night, I didn’t wanna have sex.’

He replied: ‘I am deeply sorry. I was slightly drunk and I misread your signals, it’s no excuse and I know it doesn’t make it any better.’

Which sounds like an admission that he raped her, but the man later backtracked, telling the court he misunderstood Rose’s use of the word ‘violated’ to refer to an emotional violation rather than a rape allegation.

District Court Judge Adriana Tse said the banker had been ‘nothing but kind to the defendant’ and Rose had ‘taken advantage of his kindness, naivety, friendship and romantic interest’.

What definitely didn’t help Rose’s case is that it was ‘crystal clear’ (according to the judge) that she had demanded £100,000 from the man to buy her silence.

The judge described the accused as an ‘honest, credible and reliable witness’, whilst Rose was labelled ‘dishonest, uncredible and unreliable’.

Sounds like Isabel Rose never stood a chance in that Hong Kong court. The judge didn’t appear to be too suspicious over his initial (apparent) admission in the WhatsApp exchange, or the fact he give her £5k after she asked for it.

To be fair, the man claims he gifted the £5k for Rose’s hotel and travel expenses after she expressed a desire to move out of his apartment. I guess he’s just balling like that?

Rose maintains that the money she requested was compensation the man had initially offered her following the assault, rather than an attempt at extortion.

Well anyway, what’s done is done and it’s possible that we’ve seen a massive injustice here. On the other hand, If Isabel Rose did indeed made a false rape accusation + attempted to extort money on top of it, then it’s only right she be held fully accountable.

Rose has been sent to Tai Lam Correctional Institution – Hong Kong’s oldest maximum security women’s prison.
