Sikh Man Guilty Of Murdering Student Who He Then Reported For Racism

A Sikh man who stabbed a University of Southampton student to death with an ‘extremely large’ ceremonial blade has been found guilty of murder.

Vickrum Digwa, 23, stabbed 18-year-old Henry Nowak five times on Beltmont Road in Portwood, after the two got into a pavement space dispute while passing each other on the street.

When police turned up, Digwa falsely claimed that he was the victim of a racist attack, which led officers to handcuff the dying student before he collapsed in the street.

That’s right – Henry Nowak literally died while in handcuffs because the arresting officers didn’t realise he had been stabbed and were too busy arresting him for ‘racially abusing’ Digwa.

A senior police officer has apologised on behalf of the officers.

Digwa was filmed by his victim telling him ‘I am a bad man’ moments before the attack, which included two stab wounds to the back of Nowak’s legs and a fatal wound to his heart.

Digwa, who was carrying two knives on the night, testified that Henry Nowak “barged” into him as they met on the footpath. Nowak then turned around and said: “You could have moved up a little bit more.”

Digwa alleged that Nowak punched him and knocked off his turban. He also claimed that Nowak had racially abused him, but the court found that this was a “wicked lie” as the majority of their altercation was captured on Nowak’s phone, and featured no racism whatsoever.

He claimed he stabbed the student in self-defence, but didn’t realise he had stabbed him in the chest.

Digwa was the one who called 999, but he called the police rather than an ambulance, reporting Nowak for racially abusing him. He told police that Nowak was “pretending” to be hurt.

Deputy Chief Constable Robert France apologised on behalf of the officers but said they were ‘lied to’ and would have been unaware of Henry’s injury, which apparently wasn’t obvious to them.

He said: ‘This is an absolutely tragic case and my sympathies are absolutely with Henry’s family, his friends and his loved ones.

‘I want to apologise, I want to say that I am sorry that Henry couldn’t be saved at that night. I’m sorry that he was handcuffed and arrested in the moments before he lost consciousness.

‘It’s quite clear that officers didn’t understand what had happened immediately and that is some of the context I would ask people to understand.

‘There had been a delay from those who chose eventually to call them.

‘There were lies, lies from Henry’s killer in that 999 phone call, further lies from his killer as officers arrived on scene.

‘Despite Henry telling officers he had been stabbed, it took them some minutes to realise what had really happened.

‘But within three minutes of that engagement with Henry, they were giving him first aid. They had taken the handcuffs off and they were giving them first aid.’

In addition to Digwa being convicted, his mum, Kiran Kaur, 53, was also found guilty of assisting an offender by removing the weapon from the scene.

Digwa is scheduled for sentencing next month, with his mother facing sentencing later in July. I imagine there might be lawsuit coming for the police officers involved also.

RIP Henry and thoughts with his friends and family.
