Christopher Nolan Explains Why He Cast Rapper Travis Scott In ‘The Odyssey’

One of the more baffling casting choices for Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’ has been rapper and Kylie Jenner baby daddy Travis Scott. When he popped up in a screenshot a few months back, it was basically 9/11 for “historical accuracy” film buffs!

Well, the legendary director has now attempted to explain to Time why he cast Travis Scott in the movie, sharing that the rapper will feature as a “bard”; a storyteller or a poet of sorts.

Nolan says: “I cast him because I wanted to nod towards the idea that this story has been handed down as oral poetry, which is analogous to rap.”

Well, I guess that answers that. Here’s some Travis Scott “poetry”, for the uninitiated:

Three main b1tches thinkin’ they my main bitch (21, 21)/ Hit the club and swap the hoes I came with (Straight up, straight up)/ Don’t you come outside/ We on that gang shit (Straight up, straight up)/ Had to switch my t-shirt ’cause she stained it (On God)

Homer would be proud. Was Nas not available or what?

Now look, surely Christopher Nolan of all people would not cast someone who is completely terrible in one of his most anticipated, monster-budget projects. You have to believe Travis Scott puts in a good performance and hasn’t just been thrown in there to get Gen Z/X interested in the movie. After all, there’s enough hype attached to this movie already to guarantee it’s a monster hit.

The relationship between Travis and Nolan does make sense too, as the rapper had a track featured on the ‘Tenet’ soundtrack a few years back. Awful film and terrible song, but still, it happened.

Travis Scott or not, I’d be very shocked if we don’t have a cinematic masterpiece on our hands when the movie arrives this summer. Can’t wait…
