Italian Man Sold ‘Fake’ Rolex That Turned Out To Be Real In ‘Impossible’ Crime Against Watch Shop
An Italian man who attempted to scam a Singapore watch shop ended up selling them a real Rolex instead, and still managed to wind up in jail for fraud.
A 23-year-old foreigner (reported as Italian but using a fake ID with the name “Deepak Singh”) traded what he believed was a counterfeit Rolex GMT SARU for three genuine Rolexes.
He sold the “fake” watch, which he bought from an acquaintance, to a shop in Singapore, but instead of cash, took three genuine watches valued at approximately S$90,000 (£52,335 or $70,605).

After the man left, the shop owner performed a more intensive inspection of the Rolex. He became suspicious of the serial number and the quality of the watch case, leading him to believe it was a high-grade counterfeit.
The owner tried to call the man back, but the man didn’t answer, which prompted the shop owner to call the police.
Singapore police don’t mess about – they arrested the man within 3 hours at Changi Airport while he was attempting to flee.
Amazingly, during the investigation, The Rolex Service Centre certified that every part of the watch was authentic and original, despite the man’s belief it was a fake.
It turns out that prior to this trade, another watch shop had told the man the serial number was suspicious, which is why he himself believed it was fake.
In actuality, the serial number had simply been worn down. Whoops.

He was sentenced to seven months in jail because, under the law, his intent to scam the shop with what he believed was a fake was enough for a conviction.
What really screwed him over was the fake name and fake ID, as that basically proved his intent to scam the shop. Imagine going to jail because you thought you were committing fraud, but you actually committed a perfectly legal and fair transaction instead?
Doing all that as an Italian man pretending to be Deepak Singh, with a fake passport, selling a real Rolex you thought was a fake? Hilarious stuff.
What I want to know – does he get to keep the three watches or have the real Rolex returned to him after his release? Gutted for the guy if he loses everything on top of it all.
