Comedian Hannah Gadsby Has Released Her Latest Comedy Show On Audio Only In Order To ‘Subvert The Male Gaze’

Aussie comedian Hannah Gadsby (they/them) has released their latest show Woof! as an audio-only – because she wants to ‘subvert the male gaze’.

The show, which is out now, comes after three solo shows that Gadsby recorded for Netflix, all which were filmed and thus unable to subvert the male gaze.

Gadsby says: “I recorded my last three solo shows for Netflix, but with Woof! I wanted to break that pattern. If you didn’t get to see Woof! live, you never will – because the stand-up special does not exist…at least not in the traditional sense. Instead, I recorded every night of my five-week New York City run to create an audio-only album. 

“I am keen to bring back the intimate, focussed experience of listening to comedy. Furthermore, I have long believed that the only way to truly subvert the male gaze is not to have a gaze at all – and it’s time for me to walk that walk. Finally, as a thank you for the incredible dedication of my global audience (that’s YOU!), I want to remove all barriers to consumption – as such, Woof! will be free to stream online worldwide.”

Well, fair enough really. Nothing wrong with trying something new even if the reasoning behind it has invited plenty of mockery online.

Obviously Hannah Gadsby will have known that was coming the moment they decided they wanted to ‘subvert the male gaze’ with an audio comedy show.

Maybe it’s even part of the shtick? Can’t say for sure as I haven’t watched listened to it and probably never will unless I hear it’s really good.
