Reform Candidate Wants To ‘Tax People Who Don’t Have Children’
Reform UK’s by-election candidate has proposed that childless people should be taxed extra as punishment.
Matt Goodwin, Reform’s candidate for the upcoming Gorton and Denton by-election in Manchester, pitched this as an idea to address plummeting birth rates in the UK.
In a post on his blog, Goodwin talked about imposing a ‘negative child benefit tax’ on people ‘who don’t have offspring.’
Which is pretty dumb, because there are couples not having kids precisely because of the costs involved. Taxing them more is just going to make that life unnecessarily harder for them.

But wait – Goodwin also wrote that the government should ‘remove personal income tax for women who have two or more children.’
Which is a bit of a head-f*ck, because it means people who can’t afford to have kids would not only need to have at least one in order to avoid the ‘no children tax’, but then be encouraged to have two in order to dodge income tax.
Goodwin also suggested creating a national day for parenthood, and proposed the King sends a message to families when they have a third child.
The blog post said: ‘Entrenching the importance of the family in the curriculum. Switching child benefit to incentivise families to have more children. Introducing a ‘negative child benefit’ tax for those who don’t have offspring.
Well, I can see where he’s coming from and appreciate the idea to foster a ‘pro family culture’ in the UK, but I’m not too sure how this would work in practice because it’s completely outrageous to tax people for choosing not/ being unable to have kids, not to mention it would disproportionately affect women.

Lucy Powell, Labour’s deputy leader, labelled his idea as ‘so ludicrous’ and ‘something out of ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’.’
She told The Independent: ‘It would punish millions of women and strip them of their basic dignity to choose.’
Yup – not sure how anyone would think it is a good idea really. But hey, it’s not like anyone else in Parliament has any bright ideas, so I guess this chap would fit right in if Reform were to be elected in 2029 (or sooner).
