Tongva Tribe Says Billie Eilish Is Living In A Mansion Built On “Ancestral Land” Taken From Them
A spokesperson for the Tongva tribe – the indigenous people traditionally from the Los Angeles Basin – has confirmed that Billie Eilish’s Los Angeles home is situated on their ancestral land.
This follows Eilish’s acceptance speech at the 2026 Grammy Awards the other night, in which she asserted that “no one is illegal on stolen land” and said “F*** ICE” while criticising the Trump administration’s immigration enforcement.
As per the New York Post, the Tongva have pointed out that Eilish’s LA mansion is located on ancestral land historically belonging to their community. Furthermore, they confirmed that Eilish has not personally contacted them about the property.
Fair play to them, though – they’re not asking her to move out. Rather, they’re focused on raising awareness and said they appreciate her acknowledgment of “stolen land” and hope future discussions around the topic will explicitly reference the Tongva people.
Even still, people are accusing Eilish of being a grade A hypocrite – condemning “stolen land” while living in a mansion built on land that was taken from indigenous Native Americans.
Some suggested she should return or give up the property, but obviously that’s not going to happen.
Of course, the Tongva Nation is not federally recognised, and so even if they did demand that she vacate their land, they’ve got no legal grounds to do so.
Indigenous land acknowledgment – saying “this land is the traditional territory of…” – doesn’t quite hold up in court in 2026.
Either way, I think the main point Eilish was trying to make at the Grammys is that the way ICE have been going about things has been a bit of a disgrace. Aside from carrying out raids and deporting people without due process, they’ve also managed to unnecessarily shoot dead two American citizens.
That can’t be right, can it?
