WHO Addresses Outbreak Of New Deadly Virus That’s Forced COVID-Style Checks At Airports
Here’s something to look forward to – a new virus out of India that’s already prompted a number of countries to introduce COVID-style screening at borders and airports.
There have been two confirmed cases of the Nipah virus in India’s eastern state of West Bengal since December, both involving healthcare workers in the region, with 196 contacts traced and all tested, says India’s health ministry.
In the meantine, India, Thailand, Pakistan, Hong Kong and Vietnam have all taken measures to help screen for the virus.
Not to freak anyone out or anything – the bat-borne pathogen currently has no cure.

Symptoms are as follows: high fever, headaches, myalgia (muscle pain), vomiting and sore throat. The mortality rate is 40 – 75%.
In more serious cases, symptoms can also include dizziness, drowsiness, altered consciousness, and neurological signs that indicate acute encephalitis (inflammation of the brain).
The World Health Organisation has now provided more information on the two confirmed cases: “Both individuals are 25-year-old nurses – a woman and a man – working at the same private hospital in Barasat, located in North 24 Parganas district.”
“They developed initial symptoms in the last week of December 2025, which progressed rapidly to neurological complications.”
The WHO noted that ‘there is no evidence of increased human-to-human transmission’ at this time, so that’s good to know. The 196 people who were in contact with the two nurses tested negative for the virus.
Nipah virus was first identified around 1998 during a severe outbreak in Malaysia and Singapore, and since then a total 754 human cases have been reported with 435 deaths globally, according to Science Direct.
Guess what? Trials are now underway for the ‘Nipah vaccine candidate’.
Professor Brian Angus, Chief Investigator of the Nipah vaccine trial at the Oxford Vaccine Group, told LADBible:“There are currently no specific medications or licensed vaccines to protect against or treat a Nipah virus infection, and so a future vaccine candidate is a crucial step forward in pandemic preparedness.”
Well, as long as we can all work from home again. I’m off to buy some toilet paper.
