Officials Confirm Likely Cause Of Fire At Swiss Ski Resort That Killed 40 Was Champagne Sparklers
The investigation into the fire that killed 40 people and hospitalised 119 more at a New Year’s Eve party in Switzerland has determined that it was caused by sparklers attached to champagne bottles.
Footage from the Le Constellation basement bar in Crans-Montana, a winter resort in the Valais region, shows waitresses parading bottles of champagne with lit sparklers moments before the flames took hold.
You can even see the flammable soundproofing on the ceiling catch alight:
With the images and footage going viral, social media users assumed the champagne sparklers were to blame. According to the initial investigation – they were right.
Bar owners Jacques and Jessica Moretti face questions about the safety of the establishment and the building materials used, which reportedly had a low safety rating of 6.5 out of 10.
They will have to answer for the following structural failures:
- Highly Flammable Materials: The ceiling was reportedly lined with acoustic foam which caused the fire to spread across the ceiling rapidly.
- Blocked or Hidden Exits: While the venue had a fire exit, the smoke and chaos made it nearly impossible to find. The majority of people rushed toward the main entrance, causing a deadly crush.
- Narrow Access: Witnesses described a narrow, single staircase that quickly became a bottleneck, leading to people being trampled as they tried to escape the basement bar.
There’s also the matter of regulatory and management failures:
- Capacity Issues: Although the bar had an official capacity of 300, witnesses described it as “full, full, full” and suggested it was dangerously overcrowded.
- Compliance Investigation: Swiss authorities are currently investigating whether the acoustic foam was installed legally and if the bar met regional fire safety regulations.
- Irresponsible Operations: The Italian Foreign Minister criticized the use of even small-caliber fireworks in such a confined space as an “irresponsible choice”.
The owners are potentially looking at charges of homicide through negligence if building or safety codes were found to be breached. I’m sure they feel absolutely terrible about what happened and are going to have to live with it for the rest of their lives, but operating out of a venue that has a 6.5 safety rating, they should have at least known better than to allow pyro indoors.
Only one fatality has been identified to the public and the media so far – 16-year-old Emanuele Galeppini.
Investigators say it could take days before they identify all the victims and determine the total death count, as they may have to resort to DNA and dental records.
Just an unimageable tragedy on a day that should have been all about joy and celebration. RIP to the victims and thoughts with their friends and families.
