Final Opinion

Global terrorism is something that will most likely stay with us for generations to come and will evolve in ways we can’t really foresee. How we move forward is entirely up to the people. Will we unite as a collective and demand peace or will we scream out against entire groups of people in fear? Terrorism is fear. Fear in terrorism is the motivating factor that many seem to forget when thinking of ways to curb this violence. Reacting to it with fear only strengthens its effectiveness and empowers future attackers. If we stand up and speak out as one with no fear, what hope can these murderous bastards have to control and dominate us?

There are many ways to fight these acts and options do include military force, public outcry, global peace agreements, airing out grievances in a safe manner, having governments that actually listen to people, and an educated populace that knows facts and statistics. If we really are interested in moving forward in the world without mass violence and unrest, we have to take each other seriously and we have to see through each others eyes. If a group of people have legitimate claims or issues with another, then ignoring them does nothing but embolden them.

I’m in the opinion that there is serious bias and ignorance in many, when they look at terrorism. In the West many generally see only Muslims as the threat when the reality is that our own neighbours/citizens are doing more damage. In the Middle East, many see the West as the aggressive force after decades of military involvement resulting in the deaths of millions, destruction of nations, and theft of resources. If we truly want to stop the cycle of violence we need to consider that their side of things can be valid on some levels. This is not to suggest that super extremists like ISIS are valid in any way. It is however, suggesting that normal people who have had their entire lives destroyed my foreign military powers, who decide to take up arms against them, are not necessarily “evil” or instigators of this madness.

A simple solution to “moderate” terrorism is to leave these countries and let them work out their local issues on their own. If the tables were turned and it was Muslim nations instilling their will on Europe or America through brutal military means, what would we do? Can we honestly say we wouldn’t be fighting back as well? Again, this isn’t a commentary on ISIS as they have proven time and time again that they have no valid logic, reason, or legitimate purpose for being. Their only goal is to dominate, conquer, and rule with a totalitarian fist that we haven’t seen the likes of since the Dark Ages.  While we all agree that there is no excuse for terrorism, we need to take a serious look at the policies our governments have on OUR behalf that may be causing, creating, and instigating these problems.

Simply suggesting to “kill all terrorists” without context or a logical plan only sends the message to the other side that we are on the same level. We aren’t. Anyone who uses violence to further their political, religious, or personal goals is a TERRORIST. The definition is clear and there is no mistaking it. Moving forward we should have a serious talk with each other as well as the policy makers in our governments to figure out actionable ways to prevent further attacks. It won’t be easy and there will always be disagreements, but if we truly care about progressing our species, we need to have these types of conversations. Whether you are left, centre, or right on politics, being a part of the discussion is paramount to the future.
