As if the 2022 World Cup wasn’t enough of a sh-t show already, thousands of people now believe that Qatar has paid out $7.4 million to the players of Ecuador to ensure they throw the opening match of the tournament Vs the hosts this coming Sunday.

Will be interesting to see how the Qatar/Ecuador game unfolds. Will the south Americans suddenly come down with a bout of Covid? Will they ship a last-minute goal to the most easily-savable free kick ever? It wouldn’t be the most shocking thing in the world. After all, think about how Qatar managed to host the World Cup in the first place. Spoiler = bribes and corruption. Why wouldn’t they also throw out another cheeky bribe to ensure their team makes it out of the Group stages, or at least doesn’t lose the opening game of the tournament?

This guy seems convinced it’s fake news, however:

Well hopefully that’s the case, but let’s say it is true – you’d like to think the Ecuadorian players have enough pride and love for football to turn that sum down. Losing to Qatar in a group that includes Netherlands and Senegal is probably not a risk they want to take. Then again, $7.4m is a lot of money.

Whether there’s any truth to this rumour or not, it says a lot that this is already a viral story before the World Cup has even begun. As if the human rights violations, terrible conditions, and crazy rules tourists are expected to abide by aren’t enough. Will be keeping a closing eye on the Ecuadorian players this Sunday!
