Passengers Forced To Queue Outside At Birmingham Airport Due To Lack Of Security Staff

I imagine that a lot of people in this country haven’t been abroad for over two years because of the whole Coronavirus issue and therefore will be looking forward to their summer holidays this year, but guess what? It looks like an absolute nightmare at some British airports with new pictures of queues spilling out of them and onto the tarmac outside because there was a shortage of staff at the security gates.

The photographs come courtesy of countless people on social media at Birmingham Airport yesterday morning  hacking them up to share their frustration at having to stand around for ages outside instead of enjoying their well deserved airport beer. Apparently there was such a delay going through security that people had to be picked out of the queue for their individual flights – although some people still ended up missing them because there was such a long waiting time.

A guy called Matthew Broome gave us the lowdown on the situation (speaking at 8:40am)

We’re waiting to leave now – should have left at 8.20am.

I think it was a whole two hours queue for security – I had no bags and checked in online and only going to Edinburgh, so reckon you need three to four hours.

At present, the airport can’t manage the number of flights/passengers, so think it should scale back and reduce what they do until have sorted staffing issues/processes.

EasyJet also cancelled my return flight yesterday – so bad service with them. Train home tonight!

Wow. That guy sounds a lot calmer than I would have been in a similar situation. Fair play to him. Still pretty unacceptable behaviour from the airport though.

Everyone reading this and dreading going to the airport this summer though should probably find solace in the fact that this is only happening in Birmingham right now. They’re apparently aware of the problems and are blaming it on a 12 week lag on recruiting new employees and making them operational, after the government dropped the removal rules without any prior warning back in February. Really dropping them right in it as usual. Keep your fingers crossed if you’re going away soon that it doesn’t end up being on one of these bad days.

For more of the same, check out when Manchester Airport turned into hell on Earth a few weeks ago as well. Not looking good for the summer is it?
