One of the funnier consequences of Will Smith’s infamous slap was Liam Payne’s very weird interview about it where he’s clearly on cocaine and talks with one of the weirdest accents of all time, which seems to be constantly changing even though he’s only speaking for a couple of minutes.

Whilst everyone who saw the clip made this observation, I’m not sure if any of us realised the true extent of how completely nonsensical his voice was, but thankfully movie dialect coach Elspeth Morrison has decided to explain it to us. Speaking on ‘Good Morning Britain’ she said the following:

I could hear at least five accents in there.

I’m going to say Irish, Welsh, American, something European, and definitely alien.”

He’s all over the place – he was saying things like, ‘son, nothing and cut’ like he might do in his own Wolverhampton accent.

And then he had things like, ‘daughter and beauty’ in a slightly more American way.

And then the way he was saying ‘do and you’ was, actually, like old-fashioned RP [Received Pronunciation].

Lol what the heck is an alien accent? I’m not really sure how useful Elspeth’s comments are here – I feel like most of us would have probably just settled for ‘it’s fucking weird’ – but it’s nice of her to come out and try and explain it I suppose. Hopefully her comments did more for you than than they did for me.

For more of the same, check out this survey that claims to tell you the worst accent in the UK. It’s not that surprising.
