Anyone who works at ITV knows that Phillip Schofield’s affair with runner Matthew McGreevy was one of the worst kept secrets in the industry, even though Holly Willoughby et al still act like they never had a clue about it.

Dancing On Ice presenter Jason Gardiner now claims that he confronted Schofield over the affair when he first heard rumours back in 2020, around the same time Schofield came out as gay. He says he sent Schofield a private message on Twitter to try and get to the bottom of the situation:

I went into a bit of a tailspin. I said, ‘I know this is a very difficult moment for you and I support you in your decision to come out, but I also need to ask you about certain rumours that are going around online and are you aware of them?’

Gardiner claimed that Schofield replied to the direct message with one word: “Seriously?”

That was it. It was very dismissive and that made me uneasy because I thought, ‘I’ve reached out to you very authentically,’ and it kind of really p*ssed me off.

Well I don’t know how ‘authentically’ he can claim he reached out seeing as he did so via Twitter DM rather than by text or call or in person, but it’s still interesting to see Schofield’s response knowing that he was full of sh*t. Probably would have been better off not replying tbh, seeing as Gardiner can now use the story to throw him under the bus like so many other of his peers are doing.

Well anyway, I promise we’ll try not to write about this Phillip Schofield saga anymore unless another particularly juicy story comes out. Schofield has of course given a series of interviews since his sacking in which he claims that the relationship was consensual, and started in his dressing room on the ITV in 2020. He also conceded his TV career is over:

“I shouldn’t have done it.”

I have to talk about television in the past tense, which breaks my heart.

I have lost everything.

What am I going to do with my days?

I see nothing ahead of me but blackness, and sadness, and regret, and remorse, and guilt.

I did something very wrong, and then I lied about it consistently.”

Of Matthew McGreevy, he said:

“He is an innocent party here.

I was older, I should have known better. [The relationship] was consensual, but it was my fault.”

Schofield was recently accused of ‘staging’ a photo with his 87-year-old mum as he broke the news to her about his sacking. Surely he’s not that much of a c***, is he?
