This Burmese Asiatic Black Bear is kept in captivity to remove its bile, a substance prized in traditional Chinese medicine. The process is hugely painful for the bears, and it goes without saying, but the bile has no medicinal qualities that can’t be found elsewhere in less cruel ways.
