A woman who stabbed her alcoholic dinner lady mum more than 30 times after a vicious row then filmed the blood-soaked scene has been jailed for 9 years.

The Old Bailey heard Hanaa Bennis, 22, was suffering from the effects of “childhood trauma” when she knifed Aziza Bennis in her home in Ealing, west London. Earlier that day, the pair had exchanged a series of text messages, with Hanaa saying: “You made me hate my life. U genuinely make me not want to live…” Her mother replied: “Get a life Hanaa”, to which the defendant responded: “Burn in hell you sour b***h.”

Imagine having that text exchange with your own mum/daughter? Shocking.

When an ambulance arrived at the scene, they found Aziza lying on the floor curled up in the foetal position. They were unable to save the 57-year-old mum-of-two, who was pronounced dead. Police then found a video on Hanaa’s phone showing the scene after the killing.

Joel Smith, prosecuting, said: “She pans the camera around the lounge showing her mother covered in blood. She then shows the blood-stained knife to the camera.” Neighbours reportedly heard “screams and sounds of a disturbance” coming from the address at around 3pm on August 15 last year and Aziza was heard saying: “Please don’t hurt me!” Mr Smith told the court at one point Bennis could be heard saying “I’m sorry, I’m sorry”.

Mr Smith added that Hanaa had a “volatile relationship” with her mother. A postmortem revealed Aziza had been stabbed more than 30 times, with a fatal injury to the right thigh.

In her own prepared statement, Hanaa claimed her mum attacked her with the knife first: “My mother attacked me with a knife. I sustained multiple injuries on my body from my mother’s actions. I acted in self-defence.”

Prosecutor Ed Brown KC said: “It is clear that the deceased was an alcoholic and the preponderance of the evidence demonstrates that the deceased was violent towards her children.” He went on to say the defendant was “disruptive”, “rebellious”, “drank to excess” and “often went missing” but added her behaviour was “in large part the result of the abuse by her mother”.

Honestly, it’s hard not to feel sorry for Hanaa Bennis, even if she is someone who ultimately stabbed their own mum to death. After years of physical and psychological abuse from her alcoholic mum, she snapped. It seems the courts also took Hanaa’s childhood trauma into account, which would explain the 9-year sentence which on the surface is extremely lenient for someone who’s murdered their mum via 30+ stab wounds.

On psychiatric reports, Judge Lickley said: “Both doctors agree there are a number of features I have got to consider but the over-riding one is complex post-traumatic stress disorder as a result of childhood trauma.” Mr Brown argued: “The defendant understood the nature of her conduct so she knew what she was doing when she killed her mother – and intended to do so.” He added that she had stopped taking anti-depressant medication some three months before.

At the end of the day, we can only hope Hanaa Bennis receives the support she needs in prison to rehabilitate herself after such a tough upbringing, and to also ensure she doesn’t end up stabbing anyone else once she’s free, of course. Good luck to her.
