Barry Keoghan Says Hate About His Looks Made Him “Not Want To Go Outside”

Barry Keoghan recently shared that the intense online “abuse” regarding his appearance has made him “shy away” from public life, admitting it has made him “not want to attend places” or even “go outside”.

The actor, 33, opened up on Sirius XM about the “nasty side” of being famous and not what society might call ‘conventionally attractive’.

He said: “I remove myself from online, but I’m still a human being that’s curious. It’s not nice. There’s a lot of hate online. A lot of abuse about how I look and it’s kind of past the point that it’s made me shy away. It’s made me really go inside of myself and not want to attend places. Not want to go outside. It’s becoming a problem. It becomes a problem because then you don’t even want to be on screen anymore.”

He had previously described having to deal with with online trolls calling him “ugly” back when he was dating pop star Sabrina Carpenter in 2024.

“Some of the comments on my appearance are absolutely disgusting. I don’t know. It’s a sad way to pick someone’s appearance apart. People can sit there and make videos and be like ‘I don’t like his face. He looks weird or he looks evil’ and pick you apart.”

Man, it sucks that someone can be such an immensely talented actor with no scandals to his name and still get abuse by complete strangers online over something as shallow as how he looks. I mean, the guy’s not that bad-looking, is he? Women were losing their minds when he was dancing with his d1ck out to ‘Murder on the Dancefloor’ at the end of Saltburn, weren’t they?

Clearly Sabrina Carpenter was impressed – so the guy must be doing something right…

Hopefully he finds a way to stop it getting to him because he really is one of the finest actors around at the moment. Saltburn, Banshees of Inisherin, The Killing of a Sacred Deer, Peaky Blinders. Guy is immense in every role. I actually feel bad for him knowing that it’s had such an impact on his day-to-day life.

Makes you wonder whether these trolls realise the impact their comments can have on someone’s psychological and emotional well-being, even a guy who’s as rich and famous and talented as Barry Keoghan. Well, they know now so hopefully they feel bad about it. Onwards and upwards.
