Valentine’s Day is always one of those holidays that brands and people struggle to come up with content for because you know there’s not really that much different that can be said about it, but here’s good old Banksy putting a downer on everything by releasing some new artwork that highlights domestic violence.

Of course, domestic violence is a serious subject and drawing attention to it on Valentine’s Day only serves to raise more awareness of the issues, so in reality Banksy should probably be commended for this even if it is a bit of a bummer. The artwork is called  ‘Valentine’s Day Mascara’ and shows a stereotypical 1950s housewife with a black eye and a missing tooth closing the lid of a discarded freezer with a pair of legs poking out from the other side. You know, indicating that she’s taken revenge on her husband/partner and killed him and disposed of his body in the freezer.

It appeared alongside Grosvenor Place at Margate Fire Station this week sparking speculation that it was a new Banksy and this was confirmed on the secretive artist’s Instagram page earlier today:

Pretty typical Banksy piece really isn’t it? Again, I know I said it was a bit of a bummer and he was putting a downer on Valentine’s Day at the start of this article, but to be honest Valentine’s Day is one of the worst holidays and just a lesson in crass commercialisation, so fair play to him for using his platform for doing something like this. Hopefully it achieves something in that unique Banksy way of his and changes some people’s opinions on the issues.

For more of the same, check out when Banksy revealed a new piece of artwork in his own bathroom. What a time that was.
