Christian Eriksen Preparing Return To Football Despite Doctors Warning Another Heart Incident Is “Only A Matter Of Time”
Christian Eriksen is preparing to return to football despite strong warnings from medical professionals that a third serious heart incident could be “only a matter of time”.
The Danish international, 34, collapsed on the pitch for a second time on June 7 this year during Denmark’s international friendly against Ukraine.
Unlike his initial cardiac arrest at Euro 2020 (held in 2021), his Implantable Cardioverter-Defibrillator (ICD) successfully detected the dangerous arrhythmia and delivered an immediate shock to restore his heart rhythm.
Because the device functioned as intended, Eriksen quickly regained consciousness and was able to walk off the field on his own.
Even still, doctors are advising the midfielder to abandon elite sports before it inevitably happens a third time. Danish heart specialist Henning Mølgaard told Bold that competing at the highest level with an active ICD is highly unusual and that Eriksen’s best bet would be retirement.
It seems the former Spurs, Brentford and current Vfl Wolfsburg player is keen to return to the pitch, however. Which is a questionable decision given a) he’s already filthy rich and b) more importantly, has a wife and kids who need him. The guy has decades of life in front of him! Why not hang up his football boots and ensure he’s around to enjoy the rest of his life with his family?
At the same time, the ICD worked as intended on the second occasion and so clearly he trusts it to do its job if/when he collapses on the pitch again.
Even still, it’s pretty amazing that he’s willing to go through all that again, not to mention put his family and friends through it too.
Most leagues permit athletes to compete with ICDs, so it looks like he’s good to go on that front. Respect to the guy for living life on his terms – we can only hope he doesn’t live to regret the decision.
