Amazon Driver Caught On CCTV Stealing Family Cat From Garden Avoids Prison

An Amazon delivery driver has avoided an immediate jail sentence after a Ring camera busted him stealing a family cat.

Catalin Stancu, 41, was delivering parcels in Elland, West Yorkshire, when he snatched a three-year-old rescue tabby cat named Nora from a front garden.

A Ring doorbell camera captured him staring at the pet for a prolonged period before picking her up and placing her in his car.

The family launched a social media appeal with the footage, using Stancu’s vehicle registration number to help police trace him to his home in Oldham. Three days later – Nora was safely returned home.

Stancu came up with an A+ defence during his trial at Bradford Magistrates’ Court; he claimed he ‘didn’t steal’ the cat, he ‘just took it.’

Stancu claimed he had no “bad intention”, stating: “I didn’t steal it, I just took it,” arguing that he saw the cat in the rain and thought it lacked an owner.

Which doesn’t really add up, because the cat was wearing a collar.

Stancu initially told police officers that he saw the cat in the rain and did notice she had a collar on, but chose to take her home anyway to feed and care for her. Yet, during his legal defence at Bradford Magistrates’ Court, he claimed he had not noticed the collar and assumed she was a stray animal without a home.

Come on buddy, get your story straight!

In the end, Stancu pleaded guilty under the new Pet Abduction Act 2024 at Bradford Magistrates’ Court.

He was sentenced to eight weeks in prison, suspended for 12 months, plus 15 days’ community service and £500 compensation to the family.

Most importantly, the cat was unharmed and is back home with its family.
