You would think that veganism was a diet of peace, but not in the case of 22-year-old Christopher Ellam from Halifax, West Yorkshire, who battered girlfriend Bethany Smith, 23, when she came home smelling of bacon after working in a cafe.

Christopher had ‘terrifying control’ over Bethany, having banned her from eating animal products during their four-year relationship. When she came home smelling of bacon, he called her a “fat disgusting bitch” and told her to shower straight away.

Despite the fact this prick is unemployed and Bethany’s cafe job was their only source of income, he still wanted her to quit the cafe. Bethany told the Metro:

In a rage, he grabbed a black and red lace dress I’d bought for my birthday and started destroying it. I pleaded with him not to, but it was no good.

Christopher also grabbed two pairs of my shoes and a cardigan and started cutting them up. He was doing his very best to try and isolate me from everyone and when he wasn’t getting his own way.

He grabbed the glass bottle of vinegar off the side and whacked me around the side of the head with it. He punched and kicked me in a vicious attack.

I dropped to the floor and curled up in a ball with a cushion covering my face to try and shield it, but it didn’t stop Christopher pummelling down blows.

Not to judge a book by its cover or anything, but this guy does actually look like a bit of a lunatic, right?

On forcing her to go vegan, having threatened to break up with her if she didn’t – Bethany says:

I thought Christopher loved me, but he tried to control almost every aspect of my life. I never wanted to be a vegan or even vegetarian, but he made me feel like I had to be.

After he attacked me for smelling of bacon – when I’d been helping in my stepdad’s cafe – I knew enough was enough. I’m just relieved he’s out of my life.

Amazingly, Christopher has got away with one as he was ordered to carry out 200 hours of community service and was handed a 2-year restraining order by Kirklees Magistrates’ Court, Huddersfield. No jail time. Which seems like a bit of a soft touch all things considered.

The good news is that Bethany has ditched him and is probably stuffing her face with bacon as we speak. Although to be fair this guy was probably just using veganism as an excuse for being an abuser, and the real issue was insecurity and feeling so small and weak that he had to abuse his girlfriend to feel in control of something. His vegan hunger pangs probably didn’t help matters though, will give you that.
