Man Took His Own Life After Losing All His Teeth In Botched Dental Treatment In Turkey

By now we all know the dangers of cut-price cosmetic surgery in Turkey, but I think this is the first death I’ve ever read about that’s related to budget dental surgery gone wrong.

Pawel Bukowski, 48, a forklift driver from Norwich, fell into a mental health spiral after a failed ‘Turkey teeth’ procedure.

The dad-of-three had been dealing with a chronic dental condition for years before flying out to have his teeth taken out and replaced with implants.

He had expected to be given temporary dentures in January 2025 before the permanent implants.

However, he was sent home without any dentures after his teeth were removed and told he would have to wait six months before the implants were fitted.

His wife Daria Bukowski told Norfolk Coroner’s Court: ‘Unfortunately, after removing all of his teeth, the clinic told him they could not proceed further.

‘They sent him home without any teeth and told him to return in six months. This was emotionally devastating for him.

‘He was deeply broken emotionally, losing his teeth had destroyed his self-confidence and sense of hope. Despite our constant support, from me and his daughters, he was slipping away from us.’

Sadly, Pawel could not wait six months. The loss of his teeth destroyed his confidence and sent him into a deep depression. He struggled to eat properly and began drinking heavily.

His wife added: ‘He lost all hope that things could improve. Despite all our efforts to support him, we were ultimately unable to save him.’

Despite intervention from mental health professionals, there were issues regarding medication due to his inability to stop drinking.

Those same professionals also decided he did not require psychiatric admission due to ‘sufficient protective factors’ and ‘some evidence of future planning’.

A psychiatrist visited Pawel three hours later than arranged, due to staff sickness, and found him dead in his Watton, Norfolk, home on April 28 last year.

So it sounds like there were some failings from those who were supposed to help Pawel, but ultimately, it’s just so sad that he couldn’t hang on a few more months until he got his new teeth. He must have been in a very fragile state of mind even before his teeth were removed, and thought the procedure would fix his mental health issues.

For whatever reason, he wasn’t aware that once they take all your teeth out, they cant just put implants straight in. I’m not sure why they couldn’t give him temporary dentures in the meantime, but the reality of being without teeth for all that time was too much for him to bear.
