Trailer For Scary Movie 6 Receives Backlash For Including Jokes About Pronouns

The Scary Movie 6 trailer dropped the other day and has managed to wind up the perpetually outraged types on the internet by cracking a joke about gender pronouns.

The trailer opens with a scene where a character gets stabbed on the subway, with an onlooker saying: “Oh my God, he stabbed her!”

The character, while bleeding to death, then responds by correcting the onlooker: “Not ‘her’. My pronouns are they/them. He stabbed ‘them’!”

Which is basically the oldest pronouns joke in the book, though apparently it’s still effective in pushing certain people’s buttons. Among the comments on X:

‘disappointed that the first joke in the scary movie 6 trailer is transphobic, thought the Wayans might’ve had some personal growth after all these years but I guess not…’

‘making fun of trans people is disgusting and it’s not “just a joke”. f*** you scary movie 6’

‘the reason it’s not funny and reads more as transphobia than Scary Movie is because the person doesn’t even look nonbinary. no afab nonbinary person would go out dressed like that and then angrily correct pronouns. so the joke is about how angry they got, not when they said it.’

‘transphobic jokes. you can make a joke about people without it being bigoted and unfunny.’

‘Scary Movie is about to set us back with the way y’all are talking. I promise when it’s time to criticize the racist or transphobic jokes from *insert prsn you don’t like here* that shit will be shut down cuz you defended it from ppl you do like.’

This is precisely the reaction that the Wayans brothers will have wanted when they released the trailer, so mission accomplished in that regard. All the PR around this movie for the last year has been about how they are making fun out of everyone and anyone and “don’t care who is offended.”

So it looks like it’s going to be a welcome return to 90s/00s comedy where you could joke about pretty much anything. Hopefully it’s an actually funny movie when it drops in June later this year. After all, isn’t that what comedy is about?
