Nottingham Triple Killer Was Freed By Mental Health Workers Who Feared Detaining Him Would Be Racist
A public inquiry into a June 2023 triple murder in Nottingham has found that mental health professionals involved in the care of killer Valdo Calocane failed to detain him in 2020 because they didn’t want to seem racist.
Following a violent episode three years prior to the killings, in which Calocane tried to break into a neighbor’s flat, a decision was made not to section him due to concerns regarding the “over-representation” of young black men in detention.
During that incident, the person in the flat was so frightened that she jumped out of a first-floor window, seriously injuring her spine.

Despite “leaning towards” sectioning Calocane, mental health staff opted to release him into the community after reviewing research on the disproportionate number of young black males in detention.
The inquiry also heard that in 2020, a doctor warned that Calocane “will end up killing someone,” yet he was discharged shortly after.
And so, Calocane, a diagnosed paranoid schizophrenic, was free to murder Grace O’Malley-Kumar, Barnaby Webber, and Ian Coates (below), as well as attempt to murder three others, on that fateful day in June 2023.

Counsel to the inquiry, Rachel Langdale KC, noted that the decision in 2020 should have been based purely on clinical needs and risk, not the patient’s demographic. No, you don’t say?
Furthermore, a month before the fatal attacks, Calocane assaulted two colleagues at a factory in Kegworth, Leicestershire, but was not arrested by Leicestershire Police.
It’s also worth referencing the NHS report into Calocane from last year. Here are they key findings:
- Calocane’s risk “was not fully understood, managed, documented or communicated”
- There were missed opportunities to take more assertive action towards Calocane’s care
- The voice of Calocane’s family “was not effectively considered to support the dynamic evaluation of risk” during his treatment
- *Other patients under the care of the same trust, some of whom had been discharged, had also perpetrated acts of “serious violence” across 15 incidents between 2019 and 2023*
- Calocane had no contact with mental health services or his GP for about nine months prior to the killings
At the end of the day, three people are dead because of the incompetence of mental health professionals who were so terrified of being labeled racist that they let a violent, paranoid schizophrenic out on the streets and left him to it.
Imagine blaming ‘fear of racism’ for such an unbelievable f–k up? Take away their licenses at the very least, IMO.
Calocane is currently serving an indefinite hospital order for manslaughter by diminished responsibility.
