Amazon Prime Driver Gets Van Stuck In The Thames Estuary Following Satnav Route
An Amazon Prime driver managed to get their van stuck in the mud in the Thames Estuary after they drove into the sea following a satnav route.
They were following their GPS trying to reach Foulness Island, near Southend in Essex, to make a parcel delivery. But the driver followed the satnav onto The Broomway which is an ancient tidal path across Maplin Sands which is clearly not suitable for driving through.
The six-mile-long route regularly disappears under the sea and it’s covered by fast-moving tides and thick fog. It also passes through an army firing range. Basically – it is not suitable for vehicles, and can also be tricky on foot if you don’t know the mud flaps.
There are road signs indicating as much, but I guess the driver was too focused on the satnav to notice them. Or maybe they were so determined to deliver the package on time that they didn’t care?
A HM Coastguard Southend spokesman said: ‘It is an extremely dangerous area and is on MOD property only free to access when the firing ranges are not active and barrier is open.’
Security staff working for QinetiQ, which manages Foulness Island for the MOD, said the driver abandoned the van (and the parcels) as the tide began coming in. A local farmer helped to remove the vehicle afterwards.
Amazon said it was ‘aware’ of the situation and was ‘investigating’. At least they can’t say this driver didn’t try to deliver the package. Unfortunately they relied too much on their satnav and not on common sense. I mean, don’t quite get the choice to keep going while almost driving into a body of water, but hey ho. You live and you learn.
