Stranger Things Character Comes Out As Gay As Season 5 Begins Wrapping Up The Series

Stranger Things is now airing its fifth and final season on Netflix, and the writers have decided to have one of the characters come out as gay.

In a scene that lots of viewers (and non-viewers) don’t seem to be very happy about, Will Byers tells his friends that he doesn’t like girls:

Cue the meltdown online:

“Ruined the whole series”? Now I didn’t watch past Season 1 so I can’t say for sure, but that seems like a bit of an overreaction… unless it was really that badly executed and made no sense whatsoever?

Indeed it seems that even members of the LGBT community are unhappy with how it played out, and have accused Stranger Things writers of ‘clearly not speaking to any queer people‘ about the writing process.

Others claim that there have been hints and clues that Will Byers was gay from the very first episode of Stranger Things way back in 2016, when the character was just 12 years old (he’s portrayed as 16 or 17 in Season 5).

So who knows? Maybe this 10-minute coming scene was the plan all along.

Stranger Things is the most successful Netflix show of all time with 3,977,500,000 watch hours, according to IMDb.
