A Pluribus Ad On Samsung Smart Fridge Sent UK Woman To Hospital After Triggering Psychotic Episode

A woman named Carol was hospitalised after an Apple TV+ Pluribus advert displayed on her Samsung smart fridge led her to believe someone was attempting to communicate with her.

The ad, which reads “We’re sorry we upset you, Carol,” is part of the marketing for the Apple TV+ series, but its phrasing and the mention of her name caused her to think she was experiencing a psychotic episode.

The original post came from Reddit user Fun-Blueberry-2147, who explained that her sister has schizophrenia and has a history of psychotic episodes about once every two years:

I mean, it’s awful enough that we now live in a world where our fridges display adverts, but of all the concerns you would connect to this, the idea that it could trigger a psychotic episode would probably have been last on the list. And yet, this woman saw a messages on her fridge’s LED screen, believed it was directed at her, and immediately booked a taxi to A&E because she thought she was losing her marbles.

I suppose I’d have a psychotic breakdown too if my fridge started showing me ads. Just look at the state of thing… how dystopian:

What a time to be alive. I remember reading about smart fridges getting adverts and genuinely thinking it was a joke, but it’s actually happening! Why anyone would choose to buy one of these things? What extra features does a Samsung smart fridge have that are so awesome that it’s worth being force-fed adverts in your kitchen 24/7?

Well, I’m sure someone will come up with ad-blocker for your fridge soon enough. In the meantime, I’d just stay well away from them. Pluribus is a decent show, though – worth checking out.

Get well soon, Carol!
