It’s always nice to see lottery money go to someone who really deserves it, and who better than a single dad who’s been battling bowel cancer for the last couple years while raising a teenage son and daughter all on his own?

Paul Harvey, 51, banked £1 million on the Euromillions on July 4 and went from the lowest of lows (cancer) to the highest of highs. Here’s the moment he broke the news to his son:

Incredible. What a moment! The best part is that lottery winnings like the Euromillions are exempt from tax in the UK (shockingly), which means Paul and the family are going to enjoy the full amount.

Paul said:

‘It felt like forever waiting for the kids to get home from school so I could break the news.

‘Their reactions were hilarious and heart-warming. We all feel ridiculously excited and relieved in equal measure. It just doesn’t seem real!

‘I wanted to tell the kids in person so when my son got home I set up my phone to record it.

‘I got a massive lump in my throat as I asked him “how many millionaires do you know?” He said, “zero”, and I replied: “well you do now”!

‘I then added “I swear on my life” – I do like to joke but when I say those words, my kids know to take it seriously.

‘Life hasn’t always been easy, but the kids mean the world to me, and they always come first.

‘We have never been away abroad together, and I would love to take them both to Greece. But first we need to get our passports!’

Who says money can’t buy happiness eh? It may not solve all your problems but it sure as hell can help you take care of a lot of them. I guess we’ll have to check in with Paul a few years down the road to see if he’s still grinning his face off. Don’t spend it all at once, bud!
