An NHS worker has basically managed to make money out of thin air by making a claim against a colleague who compared her to Darth Vader.

NHS blood donation worker Lorna Rooke was deeply offended when her co-worker took a Star Wars-themed psychological test on her behalf and told colleagues Rooke fell into the the Darth Vader category.

As per The Guardian, an employment tribunal ruled that comparing someone at work to the Star Wars bad guy is “insulting” and “upsetting” and a workplace “detriment” – a legal term meaning harm or negative impact experienced by the victim.

Employment judge Kathryn Ramsden said: “Darth Vader is a legendary villain of the Star Wars series, and being aligned with his personality is insulting.”

In the end, Lorna was awarded £28,989.61 in compensation. I’m not sure where that money’s coming from exactly but I’m guessing it’s from her employer – the NHS, which we all know is struggling already.

So maybe not the most ethical move to milk £30,000 out of the NHS because someone called you Darth Vader, but Lorna did work there from 2003 so I guess it’s nice for her to get a juicy bonus after 20+ years of service.

What I want to know is: did her colleagues really think she was Darth Vader-esque, or is that just what the Star Wars quiz said? You wouldn’t think she would take it that personally if it wasn’t at least a little true, but then maybe she wasn’t offended at all and just thought it would be good get-rich-quick scheme.

Which it was – to the tune of £28,989.61.

Fair play, Lorna Rooke. Enjoy your winnings. Don’t hate the player, hate the game.
