MATCH #5: Hell in a Cell Match — Triple H vs. The Undertaker w/ Shawn Michaels as Special Guest Referee

So it’s come to this, the ‘end of an era’ as two of the most dominant forces in the history of the WWE go to battle once again. Before Sunday night, I had a little trepidation in seeing these men square off at ‘Mania for two consecutive years, especially since Undertaker’s age seems to be catching up with him as of late (and his new mini-hawk hairstyle doesn’t help), but the two future Hall of Famers involved in this match didn’t disappoint in the slightest. Although a bloodless match, and not having the cell serve much purpose other than a ghoulish backdrop, this match had all the brutality and expert storytelling one would expect from these two veterans. The steal chair smashing awesomeness early-on was especially cool to watch.

In the end and after many spammed finishers, the Deadman once again slew his proverbial dragon and captured the unprecedented accolade of 20 undefeated matches at Wrestlemania. The final moments as all three left the ring and walked backstage was truly an amazing Wrestlemania moment for any fan that grew up with the WWF in the late 90s. This match also benefited from the expert commentary of good ol’ JR, further shining a light on how the art of commentary has died a horrible death in recent years in WWE. Without his personal brand of southern patois and expertise at getting the heat of the moment over to the audience, I fear that this match might’ve fallen a little flat. But, every ingredient hear gave us a true ‘slobberknocker’ to give Undertaker some measure of closure and a grand farewell. It remains to be seen if that indeed is the case.
