6) Iraq Attacks – July 2013

Mideast Iraq Violence

During the first two weeks of July 2013 there were a series of coordinated bomb attacks and shootings that left 800 people injured and killed at least 389. Sunni Muslims were revolting against the perceived ill-treatment of their kind by the Shia government. Protests began peacefully but ended up quite the reverse with the killings steadily rising over the preceding months.

The killings were carried out with hidden bombs, car bombs and so-called sticky bombs. Sticky bombs are British developed anti-tank hand grenades consisting of a sticky sphere allowing the user to stick the device to their chosen target.

Military, police and civilian areas were targeted at random, including a pet shop, cafes, restaurants packed after a day of fasting, a football pitch and a funeral procession where 12 were killed and 30 injured.
