Recruitment

The Numbers Gang - Africa - Ali - 27s When a new man arrives at a prison he is inspected by a senior member of the gang called the “die glas” (the binoculars). The new recruit is asked the following riddle: “It is raining. You are standing under an umbrella. I say to you I am getting wet; I may get sick. What are you going to do?” His answer defines him as sex slave or potential gang member. If his answer is favourable the man will be expected to attack or kill someone of the gang’s choosing before his induction. The attacks always happen on Saturdays, known as “The Day of Wrongs” and the induction rituals are carried out on Sundays – “The Day of Rights”. The new man undresses to his underwear so he can be inspected for rival gang tattoos. If any are found he will be beaten and will not be recruited.
