Bear Baiting Pakistan

In Pakistan bear-baiting isn’t part of their past, it’s part of their present. Since 2004 in the Punjab and Sindh provinces, local warlords have been setting up old school bear-baiting performances. These events can draw up to 2,000 spectators and last for many bouts over a number of hours. The modern version has minor differences from the original: bear’s nails are clipped and canines are often removed (without anaesthetic of course) before the fight. This prolongs the action and ensures that their highly trained dogs are less likely to be mauled.

Normally there are four dogs to a bear, as the bear tires it can no longer stand straight, and as it bends forwards the dogs attack its face. They clamp their jaws to the mighty beasts mouth and nose causing horrific lacerations.

Each fight lasts 2-3 minutes, if the dogs manage to pull the bear down they have won and the mouths are prized off the bear with sticks. If the bear remains upright he is said to have “won” and is lucky enough to face another battle.
