Animals rarely die, they are far to valuable to the owners so they’re kept alive for as many bouts as possible. Asiatic Black Bears are often used so not only is it unbelievably cruel, they’re using an endangered species too. Good one warlords.

The activity is illegal and there are plenty of charities trying to get it stopped as you can imagine. They concentrate on visiting local mosques and reminding them that bear-baiting is banned in the Quran in an attempt to put people off going to watch. It’s a slow process though. Bears that had been saved by these charities were taken to a sanctuary in 2000, but the flooding in 2010 killed 20 out of the 23 bears kept there. The bears have no luck at all in Pakistan.

Bear Baiting Past And Present - Pakistan - Attack Bear

Before I leave you, a quick mention for Russia. Back in the day, when they enjoyed a bit of bear-baiting, they would pit a bear against a human with a mace or a belt knife. If the crowd thought the human had done well they would throw in a spear and the human would attack the bear in the throat to finish it. That’s just as horrific as attacking with dogs, but at least it’s less cowardly I suppose. So typically Russian though isn’t it?

Anyway, if you have been inspired to help the brow beaten black bears of brutal Pakistan visit this WSPA page.
